We are delighted to share that Camouflage Café and Brighter Futures have been featured by Thamesmead Now, highlighting our journey to bring the Titmuss Avenue Community Garden in The Moorings back to life.

The garden is becoming much more than a place to grow plants. Our vision is to create an inclusive, welcoming community space where our learners can develop practical skills, local residents can get involved, and food can be grown, shared and enjoyed together.
From Garden to Café — Creating Real Opportunities for Our Learners
At the heart of the project are our learners.
Learners from Brighter Futures Specialist College will use the Titmuss Avenue Community Garden as a real-world environment to develop practical skills through gardening and horticulture.

Through practical involvement in the garden, learners can develop skills including planting, growing and harvesting produce, teamwork, communication, responsibility and following practical routines.
The connection between the garden and Camouflage Café creates an opportunity to take this even further. Where possible, produce grown in the garden can be used as ingredients at the café, allowing learners to experience the full journey from planting and growing through to food preparation and serving the community.
As Kemi Madumere, Co-Founder of Brighter Futures, explained in the Thamesmead Now feature:
“As with Camouflage Cafe and everything we do, it’s all about our students.”
That principle remains central to our work. We want to create real environments where people can learn by doing, build confidence and develop skills that have practical value beyond the classroom.
Growing Food That Reflects Our Community
We want the Titmuss Avenue Community Garden to reflect the diverse community around us.
Our plans include growing a range of culturally relevant produce that can be used at Camouflage Café, shared with local residents and potentially brought together through community meals and other activities.
For us, this is about more than gardening. It is about bringing people together through food, learning and shared experiences.
Preparing to Open Titmuss Avenue Community Garden to the Public
One of our most important ambitions is to open the Titmuss Avenue Community Garden to members of the public.
Before doing so, we are carrying out the necessary readiness work to ensure the space is safe, welcoming and properly managed. This includes preparing the planting areas, improving the overall appearance of the garden, completing essential safety and accessibility checks, and putting appropriate arrangements in place for public access.
Our intention is to initially open the garden during selected, controlled opening hours, giving local residents the opportunity to enjoy the space while allowing us to learn what works well before expanding public access further.
Over time, we want the garden to become a genuine community asset: somewhere people can spend time, connect with others, participate in gardening activities and enjoy a valuable green space in the heart of The Moorings.
More Than a Garden: A Space for Community, Learning and Connection
Our ambitions for the garden go beyond growing fruit, vegetables and plants.
Over time, we want to explore opportunities for community gardening sessions, shared meals, outdoor events and other inclusive experiences that bring local people together.
The garden complements what we are already building through Camouflage Café: a welcoming community hub where people can eat, meet, take part in activities and feel connected.

We are proud to have our vision recognised by Thamesmead Now and to see the work of our learners, team and wider community shared with a broader audience.
The original feature, “Moorings community garden set for fresh start,” highlighted the investment already made in improving accessibility at the garden, including raised beds, a water connection and a new asphalt path.
We would like to thank Peabody and everyone who has supported the development of the space and helped us move this vision forward.
This is only the beginning. We look forward to sharing more updates as the Titmuss Avenue Community Garden develops, our learners become increasingly involved and we prepare to welcome members of the public into the space.
