Camouflage Café in Thamesmead has been bringing residents together through a series of community cinema nights, supported by a grant from the Black Culture Collective.

The programme was created to celebrate Black British culture, storytelling, and community connection, while providing an accessible space for local residents to gather, relax, and enjoy meaningful films together.

Following the success of the first events, the cinema nights have now become a monthly community tradition, taking place on the last Friday of every month at Camouflage Café.

A Community Café with a Purpose

Located inside The Moorings Social Club in Thamesmead, Camouflage Café is more than a café — it is a community wellbeing hub designed to bring people together through food, culture, and shared experiences.

The café operates as part of the wider Brighter Futures initiative, supporting opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities while creating inclusive events for the local community.

Events such as cinema nights help transform the café into a vibrant cultural space, encouraging residents of Thamesmead and South East London to connect, socialise, and experience new stories together.

Celebrating Black British Film and Culture

The cinema series focuses on films that reflect Black British experiences, identity, and culture, helping audiences discover important stories that are often underrepresented.

One of the highlights of the series was the screening of:

Pressure (1975)

Widely recognised as the first Black British feature film, Pressure explores the challenges faced by a British-born son of Caribbean immigrants growing up in London. The film remains a landmark moment in Black British cinema history.

The cinema programme has also featured:

  • Oríkì – a contemporary film exploring culture, heritage, and identity
  • Additional films celebrating Black storytelling and community narratives

Each screening has sparked thoughtful conversations among attendees about culture, identity, belonging, and representation.

Bringing the Thamesmead Community Together

Across the cinema nights, Camouflage Café has welcomed a wide range of guests including local residents, community groups, families, and supporters of the café.

The events provide a relaxed atmosphere where people can enjoy:

  • Film screenings in a welcoming community setting
  • Fresh food and drinks from the café
  • Opportunities to meet neighbours and build new connections
  • Conversations inspired by the films

These evenings demonstrate how community spaces like Camouflage Café can strengthen local connections and promote cultural appreciation.

Next Community Cinema Night – 27 March

The next cinema night will take place on Friday 27 March, continuing the café’s monthly film series.

The featured film will be:

Gone Too Far!

Gone Too Far! is a lively British comedy-drama that explores family, identity, and cultural differences through the story of two brothers from very different worlds who spend a chaotic day together in London.

The film promises to deliver humour, relatable characters, and a fresh perspective on modern multicultural Britain, making it a perfect addition to the Camouflage Café community cinema programme.

Residents across Thamesmead, Greenwich, and South East London are warmly invited to attend and enjoy the evening.

Building Culture, Connection and Community

Through initiatives like the monthly cinema nights, Camouflage Café continues to build its reputation as a community hub in Thamesmead that celebrates culture, creativity, and inclusion.

From film screenings and line dancing classes to community talks and Menopause Café events, the café is committed to creating welcoming spaces where people can come together, share experiences, and support one another.

The team would like to thank the Black Culture Collective for helping make the cinema series possible and for supporting community-led cultural events in Thamesmead.
